Among the different candidates at the EU-presidency, one sould not forget the contribution of Giscard d’Estaing, – seconded by our former Prime-Minister Jean-Luc DeHaene -, to the new European constitution ( Treaty of Maastricht 1992, as amended in 2007 during the Lisbon revision of the latter treaty, due to the discording French referendum). With the help of the President of the Commission, Claude Juncker and Martn Schulz, President of the EU-Parlement, we were presented two dummy presidents like Herman Van Rompuy and Donald Tusk, resonating faithfully to Angela Merkel. Here, we enjoyed a piece of sarcastic British humor, when Eurodeputy, Nigel Farage, compared the newly nominated EU President Van Rompuy to a „damp rag“ adding to it „You are a stalking murderer of the European democracy and of the national States“. More recently, Mr. Satmyer was elevated to the number 2 function of the Commission, wrecklessly masterminded by Juncker and the complacent Parlement.
1. Arthur Sullivan geb. 1842 – I would I were a king [Marc & Hélène]
Lyrics by Victor Hugo, himself a fierce defender of the United States of Europe
I would I were a King, fair maid,
As Kings there were of old,
My sceptre and my chariots,
And my slaves on bended knee,
My sceptre, my chariots,
And my slaves on bended knee,
My marble baths, my palaces,
My diadem of gold,
My mighty hosts, my navies,
Which the sea could scarcely hold,
I’d give them with my Kingdom
For a look of love from thee!
And were I Jove, the earth the air,
The water’s wide domain,
The Titans chain’d in darkness,
And th’Immortals in their bliss,
The firmament, its countless stars,
And all that they contain,
And time and space, and Heav’n itself,
My vast and boundless reign,
I’d give them all (ter),
And were I Jove, the earth the air,
The water’s wide domain,
The Titans chain’d in darkness,
And th’Immortals in their bliss,
I’d give them all (bis),
II’d give them all, to thee, my Love
In barter for a kiss!
2. Georg Friedrich Haendel geb. 1685 – The trumpet shall sound (Messiah)
[Marc & friends]
We were cheered with too many false trumpet sounds. Haendel mentions 7 x «the dead shall be raised incorruptible ». In England principles of „righteousness“ and „fair-play“ are quite important. Are we to support megafusions like Bayer x Monsanto or Siemens x Alstom or accept gigantic oligopoles in the European sugar industry? Indeed the Greek state accounts deserve a proper punishment, but concurrently The inspecting Euroteam in charge of the accesion dossier to the Eurozone has proven its incompetence to say the least. It only deserves a due punishment.
The trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption and this mortal must put on immortality. (I Corinthians 15:52-53)
